Sketches of Life

on

Life’s been full lately in some good, relationship-building ways. Recently, I’ve been doing some conceptual sketching for a few different projects (and some just for fun on long phone calls). It’s got me thinking about how life feels like that sometimes – a pencil etching it’s way across pages – sometimes in congruity, sometimes seemingly unrelated.

Different people, activities, feelings…  when you put them together, even the most disjointed images can make a beautiful collection of stills.

Here’s a few of the things that have made me smile this spring.

Spring’s been a mixture of full and empty, like spring can often be. New things are springing forth from the ground, and yet somehow there’s a tantalizing taste of what’s to come, like the pencil sketches that are filling up pages…

Seeing your sketch reminds me of a quote I recently read:

“We know not what we shall be”; but we may be sure we shall be more, not less, than we were on earth. Our natural experiences (sensory, emotional, imaginative) are only like the drawing, like penciled lines on flat paper.

If they vanish in the risen life, they will only vanish as pencil lines vanish from the real landscape, not as a candle flame that is put out but as a candle flame which becomes invisible because someone has pulled up the blind, thrown open the shutters, and let in the blaze of the risen sun.
~ CS Lewis in The Weight of Glory

I don’t think I’ll be able to sketch again without thinking of this. 🙂 Hope you had a great weekend.

What a beautiful quote, Vanessa. Thanks for sharing that. It pretty well sums up life, in a way that makes it seem like one big anticipation of what’s coming. I think I’ll have to save that one 🙂
